Setting up MacOS to use the L2TP VPN service

Before you start you must make sure that you have enabled our UK Proxy VPN Access Service in your Control Panel. If you are an existing user, and have already activated your account in the control panel, you can skip to section 3.

1.0 Activate your User Control Panel

Login to the User Control Panel by clicking on the link below:

Login to the SimplyExpats.Net Control Panel

The Login window will be displayed as below.

Login using the Username and Password you received in our signup email.

(If you have not received an email with your login details, please check your Spam and Junk mail folders).

2.0 Confirm your Account Details & Activate your Account

Once you have successfully logged in, the SimplyExpats.Net Account Confirmation window will be displayed.

Press the Confirm Details & Activate your Account button.

Once your account is activated, you will be returned to the main SimplyExpats.Net User Control Panel window.

3.0     Configuring your Mac to use the VPN Service

Setting up MacOS to use the service is simple.

First, Open the System Preferences Window.

Select the Network Preferences

Press the + button, towards the bottom left of the window, to add a new connection.

Enter the details as shown above.

Interface Type: VPN
Service Name: L2TP
Press Create to create the service.

The network configuration window is displayed.

Configure the following settings:

Configuration: Default
Server Address: (note: uk hyphen vpn not uk fullstop vpn)
Account Name: Enter your username.

Note: Your Username and Password were generated by PayPal, when you subscribed to the VPN service. Your username and password are also stored as a subscription in your PayPal account. This can be found by selecting Profile -> My pre-approved payments. Your subscription to the SimplyExpats.Net service is marked Esix Limited.

Press the Authentication Settings button, to enter your password.

Under the Machine Authentication section, click on Shared Secret, and enter (Note: this is case sensitive).

Press OK to apply the password, and you will return to the Network Configuration Window

Check the Show VPN status in Menu Bar, and press Apply, to save your configuration.

Next click on the Advanced button.

The advanced properties window will be displayed as below.

Check the Send all traffic over VPN connection box, and press OK.
You will return to the Network Configuration window.

Press Apply, to save the connection.

4.0     Connecting to the Service

VPN systems are slightly different from traditional web proxy based systems.
Unlike web proxies, a VPN is an on demand service. You login or connect to the service when you need it, and disconnect or logout when you have finished.
Put simply, you connect to the service, when you require access to Internet sites in the UK, for example to watch UK iPlayers or access UK related websites., and disconnect when you have finished.

4.1     Connecting to the Service

To connect to the service, from the System Preferences –> Network Window, select the connection, and press Connect.

You can also connect to the service from the quick start MacOs Menu.
Simply select the Network icon on the menu, and press the Connect to, as shown below.

4.2     Disconnecting from the Service

To disconnect from the service using the quick start menu, select Disconnect from
You can also disconnect from the service my loading the System Preferences -> Network window.
Press the Disconnect to disconnect from the service.
