Upgrading your Windows PC  to use the SimplyExpats.net OpenVPN 2 Service

IMPORTANT NOTE: The SimplyExpats VPN service has been upgraded to the latest OpenVPN version which contains some important security enhancements.

SimplyExpats customers are requested to download and use the new SimplyExpats2 service configuration file as soon as possible.

1.0 Remove the old OpenVPN software version

1.1. Load the Control Panel and go to the Programs & Features
1.2. Depending on the version of OpenVPN you are running, there will be two, or three programs that need to be uninstalled. These will be OpenVPN (plus the version number), OpenVPN-GUI (plus a version number) which may or may not be installed, and TAP Windows (plus a version number). Uninstall each one, by right cliching on the program, and selecting Uninstall.
1.3. Close the Control Panel and load Windows File Explorer.
1.4. Check to see if the folder c:\Program Files\OpenVPN or c:\Program Files\OpenVPN Technologies exists. If it does, delete it. (This will ensure that no old configuration files are left on your PC. Note: You may need to be logged in with administrator privileges.)
1.5 Delete the OpenVPN GUI desktop icon - by right clicking it, and selecting Delete.
1.6 REBOOT (Important)

2.0 Configuring your Windows PC to use the SimplyExpats.net VPN Service

Setting up your Windows PC to use theSimplyExpats 2 service is simple.

2.1 Download the OpenVPN Software

The SimplyExpats 2 Service uses the latest OpenVPN software.

Download our OpenVPN software from our Website by clicking the link <<HERE>>, and save to your Desktop.

Double Click on the Install Wizard (openvpn-install-2.4.2-I601.exe) to install OpenVPN.

The OpenVPN installer will load.

Press Run.

NOTE: Accept all the defaults.

The Main install window will be displayed. Follow the onscreen instructions.

During the installation, OpenVPN will need to install a new driver on your system. You may receive a message from Windows asking if you wish to install the drivers.

Press Yes to install the drivers.

The Install TAP device window is displayed. Press install to install the TAP device.

The completion window will be displayed.

Press Finish.

The software installation is now complete.

3. Download the SimplyExpats 2 Configuration file

If you subscribe to our multi country service, you only need to upgrade your UK configuration at the moment.

Depending on your browser, you may need to right click on the link below, and then Save As... to save the file to your Downloads folder.

4.0 Load the OpenVPN software

Once installed, start the OpenVPN Gui, either by double clicking theOpenVPN GUI icon on your desktop or selecting Start -> Programs -> OpenVPN GUI from the Start Menu.

The OpenVPN GUI will minimize to the system tray. If you click the ^ icon in your system tray, you will see the OpenVPN icon there.

5.0 Import the SimplyExpats 2 Configuration File

Right click the OpenVPN icon in the system tray to display the options.


Select the Import File option.

Navigate to your Downloads Folder, and select the SimplyExpats2.ovpn file.

Press OK to confirm the import.

That's it.

Both OpenVPN and the new SimplyExpats configuration will be complete.


6.0 Connecting to the SimplyExpats2 Service

Load the OpenVPN client.

To connect to the new SimplyExpats2 service, right click on the OpenVPN icon in the system tray, and press connect. The first time you do this, you will be prompted for your username and password.


7.0 Disconnecting from the Service

To disconnect from the SimplyExpats2 service, right click the OpenVPN icon in the system tray, and select Disconnect


To disconnect from the service, simply click on the disconnect button on the connection dialog box.
